Excerpt from an article by Stephen Tow:
At the end of the lunch, [Jack Endino] told me about a Wellwater Conspiracy gig taking place the next evening at a now-defunct club called the Catwalk. WWC, a three-piece, featured former Soundgardeners Matt Cameron (then and now with Pearl Jam), and Ben Shepherd.
I ended up going to the show myself since it wasn’t my family’s thing. About twenty or so patrons watched a Ramones cover band open. I’m pretty sure I saw Tad Doyle in the audience, especially since his band would play later, but I was too shy to say hello. (I interviewed him by phone in 2006).
The low-key atmosphere immediately struck me. (The ad in The Stranger, Seattle’s weekly paper, displayed “Wellwater Conspiracy” in small print, with no mention of the celebrity of two of its players.)
As I stood among the handful of patrons, Cameron came out to set up his drum kit. No roadies…and nobody in the audience gave a shit. The band then took the stage. I got to see Cameron play drums from about 20 feet away. Amazing…and he sang at the same time. And he sang well. And he sang while he played weird time signatures. How? After about 40 minutes, the band broke down its equipment and left. The performance was stunning, and, like I said, totally under the radar.

The Croc was crowded as hell! I started WWC’s set in the very back of the place by the bar…but eventually weaseled my way up towards the front, on the left side of the stage. John was well hidden behind the stacked speakers…save for a foot wide spot…perfect for pictures! Their set was rocking (RAWKING!). Even at the end of their “grueling 11 day tour”, they still put on quite a show! During the show, Matt broke his hi-hat cymbal, making it necessary to try some “experiments”. Even then, they still sounded great! (But then, they always sound great to me.) I really liked the addition of Teen Lambchop to tonight’s set…great song! Great way to end the show.
Hey…when’s the next tour? 😉

Some JERKS stole the setlists before WWC was even done playing!! BASTARDS! And stupid me didn’t write it down during the show. If anyone has the setlist info…please email the!
Carolyn’s Review:
The Satyricon is a small venue…with a conspicuous post right in front of the stage. Opening was a band called Camaro Hair…didn’t listen to them at all. But next was Cat From Dog Mountain. For those of you who are quite familiar with WWC, this is the band that Derek Burns and Paul Burback are in. Derek does the vocals on Tidepool Telegraph and they both do vocals on Tick Tock 3 O’Clock (from The Scroll). They were EXCELLENT…so much so I bought their CD…which kicks ass. Wish I knew where you all could buy a copy…great music. An interesting side note…John plays on one track on their album and also co-produced it.
One thing different for this WWC show is that they moved Matt’s drum set up to the front of the stage. Also, John and Glenn switched sides…John is on the left and Glenn is now on the right. I watched the show right up front between Matt and Glenn. Now, since I thought I could get a setlist, I wasn’t writing down the songs as they happened, so I can’t give a play-by-play review. But they RAWKED! They were relaxed, looking like they were having fun. I couldn’t quite see what John was doing, as Matt’s drums were in the way, but I still took pictures of him anyway. One of my highlights – hearing Now, Invisibly live (amongst other things). I love that song!! Made the webmistress quite happy… :^)
Sullen Glacier has taken a slight metamorphosis since the first time I had heard it…and I wasn’t aware that Matt had vocals on it! They were quite distorted though. Still…a great song! Hope that one makes the next album. They also played their latest song Turtle Pants. Their latest cover song: The Lemon Piper’s Green Tambourine. Sounded awesome to me! The crowd was quite receptive too. As well they should…they RAWK!! This was the best show of theirs that I’ve ever seen!

From Aaron:
What can I say? It was my first time seeing Wellwater Conspiracy and they were awesome. The surprise of the night came when Eddie Vedder jumped on stage and did two songs. There’s really no way to describe them. You just have to see them for yourself and enjoy how good they are.
From Scott:
Saw the boys at the Casbah on Friday…AMAZING. The crowd was going nuts for the band all night. Of course, when many people in the crowd realized that Mr. Vedder was standing on the far right side of the club, they went a bit crazy, but give the crowd some credit, as they regained composure and remembered that Wellwater was in the house. Being about 6 feet away from Matt was mind-blowing. It was like being in the middle of a thunderstorm. As Jeff Ament once said, “Just hop on the Cameron train!” Awesome show. WWC went off like a motherfucker. I couldn’t believe Matt was pounding the skins about 6 feet from me. The X-Factor was their keyboard player (Glenn). He was getting some sweet sounds out of all that old equip he was using, especially during the instrumentals.

5.5.2001 – Hoboken, NJ – Maxwell’s
Bands Played (in order):

Carolyn’s Review:
Maxwell’s is very small…so small there is no backstage area or room for monitors on the stage. The monitors are all stacked up in front of the stage, save for one 3 foot wide section along the stage…this is where the bands get on and off the stage. One of my friends and I were lucky enough to be watching the show from this 3 foot space! And the stage itself was only about a foot or two off the ground anyway. AWESOME!
Before WWC played, we had to suffer through one of the worst bands I’ve EVER heard…The Januaries. I had to put my earplugs in so I wouldn’t have to hear them as well. God were they awful. Their set seemed to last forever…but finally they finished and WWC took the stage. John, Matt, Jack and Glenn took their spots on stage and got ready to play. Remember the 3 foot space I mentioned earlier? Well right before WWC started to play, someone wedged between me and my friend to get in front of us. I was mad at first…but then I realized it was Ben! What is he doing here? He squats on the floor in this 3 foot space and leans on the stage and he stays there until the part of the set where he sings. Slight freak out by the webmistress! And he was so nice to my friend and I too while we were taking pictures, since the only way we could get any pictures of Matt was to squat down and take them under his cymbal set up. Ben would just contort out of our way…we thanked him for it too. Anyway, the show starts. Same setlist as the night before at Irving Plaza.
Farside of Your Moon is the opener, followed by I Got Nightmares. They sounded very together…very good. And yes, I was screaming my fool head off. (*blush*) Loudly. I hope I didn’t make Ben deaf! Next was The Ending…what can I say? They were amazing!! They sounded awesome!! Lucky for you, there’s the video you can watch and see for yourselves. I’m watching it as I write this review. Lucy Leave is next. I said on my review of the Irving Plaza show that they were rocking out…well they are rocking out more tonight. Maybe it’s because of the tiny venue, maybe it’s because John was “back home” so to speak…who knows. All I know is that they “kicked it up a notch” for tonight.
(yeah…I watch Food Network…wanna make something of it?)
After Lucy Leave, this heckler…who apparently just bought the Hater album that day…started yelling out “Roadside”. So I yelled “wrong band!” Then they went right into Right of Left Field. John even kicked up a leg during that song! WOO! After the song finishes Matt says “Thank you….Hoboken…fucking New Jersey. How ’bout them gardenburgers?” Then the heckler starts yelling out “Roadside” again and Matt says “Roadside? Uh…no…” The guy wouldn’t quit! So I scream out “wrong fucking band!!!” I think he finally got the hint because he quit asking. Of Dreams is next…one word…WOW! Best version I’ve heard…how Matt can sing so solidly while drumming like that at the same time? Amazing!! Extended ‘jam’ at the end.
Hal McBlaine is next…again…they are still rocking…and I’m still screaming my head off! Brotherhood of Electric also kicked butt. Jack’s rocking bass solo…Glenn attacking the keyboards…I thought he was going to throw it out at the audience there for a minute. I’m running out of adjectives…so I’ll recycle one. Awesome! Now is when Ben crawls up on stage…and I do mean crawl! I think he was crouched down too long and his legs were stiff. This version of Thing in E was better than last night too…they just sounded to tight and in tune with each other tonight. Unbelievable!
Between Thing in E and Sleeveless Ben made this comment “Hey Matt…talk about gardenburgers…it smells like…sour salad…dirty Sanchez…”Jack says “Oooo…harsh!” Then Ben says loudly “Who the fuck sang up on this stage? (yells) HOLY SHIT!! OWW!” Reference to The Januaries, I presume…which wasn’t too far off. Sleeveless was rocking again! Ben was jumping all around the stage…Matt was drumming like a madman…awesome! (I need new adjectives) You Do You was equally energizing. The highlight: Ben howling like a cat in the middle of the song. “rraawwoolll!” Trowerchord was electrifying! Ben almost falls over John’s guitar pedals. Again…more rocking out by the band. LONG jam at the end…John’s looping his guitar…Ben’s got his microphone up against John’s amp to give it some feedback. Matt’s drumming like crazy…Jack and Glenn are tearing it up too. The webmistress was going crazy…screaming like a lunatic! Excellent finish to such a great set!

Carolyn’s Review:
The show kicks off with Farside of Your Moon. Always love hearing this song live. Awesome instrumental…has to be one of their best. Band personnel (at this point) are Matt Cameron on drums, John McBain on guitar, Jack Endino on bass, and Glenn Slater on keyboards. They sound great…and look like they are enjoying themselves. Next song is a new one off The Scroll and Its Combinations: I Got Nightmares. I go nuts…(I told you I would be a screaming lunatic)…this is one of my favorite songs off the new album. The tempo that they play this song is faster than on the album…but it sounds great either way. My friends and I are front row, on the far right side of the stage, and we have great angles to take photos of Matt and John…Jack and Glenn are on the far left side of the stage…but I still took pictures of them too…but the pictures didn’t turn out as well. To my left is someone from TVT Records videotaping the show. I told him that I would try my best not to bump into him (because I tend to rock out watching concerts) and warned him that I would be screaming. Did I ever! :^)
The Ending is next…and oldie but goodie. Another song that the tempo is kicked up for the live performance. Lucy Leave is after that and Right of Left Field follows that. They all rocked! But I may be biased just a little. Next is Of Dreams…another new song off The Scroll…the Steve Morgan cover, I believe. Another freak out moment for the ‘ol webmistress! The instrumental Hal McBlaine follows this song…the song my husband says sounds like Zeppelin. (OK honey…whatever you say…) One of the new instrumental songs from The Scroll is played next: Brotherhood of Electric. Jack rips into his bass on this song…with a big grin on his face. There was another moment (I don’t remember what song it happened on) where Matt was drumming and lost the stick in his right hand and he just looked down with a “ah shit…how did THAT happen” look on his face…but the other 3 limbs just kept going while he grabbed another stick. Why that struck me as funny, I don’t know. John is even rocking out…for John, that is. When I saw them play in Seattle last November for Terrastock, John hardly moved…other than to use the guitar pedals in front of him. But tonight he was in the “guitar god poses” and everything! Awesome!
The next song is Thing in E…and I recognize this song from Terrastock too. What a scorcher…and I do NOT know who originally did this song. (Thanks to those who emailed me – Thing in E is a Savage Resurrection song) And this is the first song where Ben Shepherd joins the group. This song kicks ass…and I rock out some more…hitting the poor guy videotaping the show. I apologize profusely. I think these clips that are being taped tonight will eventually be on the TVT Records website…there were two other cameras taping as well…but that may have been for the closed circuit televisions they had around the building showing live feeds from the shows. Sleeveless is next…and this is one of the better live versions I’ve heard Ben sing…he’s right on. The punk rocker emerges!
You Do You is next and they close their set out with Trowerchord. Overall the show was FANTASTIC! No technical problems…nothing that I could see or hear anyway. And I couldn’t beat my vantage point for the show either. These guys need to play live a lot more…they RAWK! :^)
